Holter Monitor

Have you ever had a symptom or sign that was of great medical concern to you but when you went to the doctor the symptom disappeared? This is not uncommon. Some illnesses also tend to only appear as soon as you step into the doctor’s office. In hypertension, for example, it is known as white coat hypertension. Most heart conditions tend to be transient, meaning; they only appear at certain times or during certain activities. It is not possible to sit around the hospital waiting for the illness to reappear so that it can be tested or diagnosed. Kisumu heart center has the ideal solution for this, a test called holter monitoring.

A Holter monitor is a type of electrocardiogram (ECG) that is portable and can be carried around by the patient. Just like an ECG, it will record your hearts electrical activity through a specified amount of time -mostly, 24 hours – and store it. The information will then be retrieved and examined for any abnormalities once you return to the heart center the following day.

How is It Done?

Depending on the available equipment, 3 to 5 electrodes are placed on the patient’s chest, around the heart. These are connected by wire cables to a small machine that records the hearts activity. The machine can be attached to the patient’s waistline or secured elsewhere on the body. The patient is also issued with a diary printout onto which they record any symptoms they encounter over the 24-hour period.

The symptoms may include; palpitations, chest pain, an increase in heart rate, breathlessness etc. The patient should also indicate when they encounter other non-medical factors that may increase heart rate e.g. anxiety, emotional distress or other forms of activity or excitement. This test can also be done alongside a cardiac exercise stress test.

Frequently Asked Questions

As stated above, most heart conditions are transient. A Holter monitor can be used to diagnose angina, small heart attacks, thyroid disease as well as anxiety disorders. It is widely used to assess the degree of heart failure and exercise intolerance as does the exercise tolerance test. It can also help to rule out these conditions.
